A road trip with teenagers from Sydney to Gold Coast

 Why Gold Coast?

From Sydney you can only go inland up or down. There's not much inland. So lets go north.

It's about a 9 hour drive, so I suggest you split it and stop at Motels or Camp Sites:

Starting at Sydney

Port Macquarie - 4 hour drive from Sydney.

Hydrogolf - Just a driving range where you hit balls in to a lake. They have a, not very good, mini-golf next to the lake. It's fun and relaxing hitting the balls and trying to hit the targets in the lake.

Ten Pin Bowling - Wave Bowl - Just a simple game of bowling.

Bare foot bowling - You have to phone and book. Port City Bowling. Hibbard Bowling.

WildNets Adventure Park - trampolines suspended in the air. It's best for 8-11 year olds, but even adults can have fun. It's a 2 hour thing, you'll get very hot jumping around.

Moutnain biking - we didn't do this, but 30mins north of Port Macquarie, Montem Bike Tours rents out bikes from Kempsey Golf Club, which is the trail head to the Kalateenee MTB Trails.

Byron Bay - 4 hour drive from Port Macquarie

Surfing - Byron Bay has a great point break, which is ideal for learning. Compared to the terrible beach breaks of Manly/Bondi, this is a dream for beginners. Teens with no surfing experience should be able to get to their feet on their first lesson here and have fun. Black Dog Surfing.

Minyan Falls - A 45 min drive from Byron Bay. It's a stunning waterfall, you can walk to the bottom in about 30 minutes, then swim in the lake under the waterfall.

Bike Hire - Ballina bike hire - I didn't do this but might be nice.

Gold Coast - 1 hour drive from Byron Bay

Movie World, Dream World, Wet N Wild, Whitewater World, Sea World. I think it's best to do 3 days of parks. Get a 2 day pass and do Warner/Whitewater, and a one day pass for DreamWorld/WetnWild or vice versa.

Infinity Mazes - a silly little 45 minute thing in Gold coast. It's an 'experience' where you walk through a number of rooms in semi darkness. For example one room is tiled with mirrors, floor, ceiling, walls, and there are little lights in the darkness which are reflected in the mirrors, so it kind of feels like you are in space surrounded by stars (with a little imagination).

Other things:

Just north of Port Macquarie is Nambucca Heads. This is a really pretty area.

North of Gold Coast

4 hours north of Gold Coast is Fraser Island. Personally I don't think much of the Island. It's also expensive if you need to hire a FWD. If you have a FWD and have a few days to camp there and chill then maybe it's OK.

7 hours north of Gold Coast is Seventeen Seventy, where you can get a tour ferry out to Lady Musgrave Island which I think is about the furthest point south of the Great Barrier Reef.

Lake Macquarie

Ghosties beach - at low tide there is a super cool cave to explore. It's near the Pink Caves which look cool but are closed because people keep dieing there.

Fishing - You can hire a tinnie boat for 6-8 people with a motor for 4 hours. You can buy the bait there. You may need to take fishing rods. You don't need a boat license. We went and it was fun, but the water was choppy and it felt like we were going to tip over at one point, and we almost got the boat stuck on the sands. We caught a tiny tiny fish. It was interesting. You need someone that knows how to fish really.

Kayak hire - Not very exciting.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding - Very hard for adults, easier for kids.

Gosford -

Gosford Regional Gallery and Edogawa Commemorative Garden has a nice Chinese garden where you can feed the fish and an art gallery to look around.

Trampolening - Flip Out Gosford. Good for teens. This one isn't very big, but ok for an hour or 2. They have a foam pit you can practice summersaults in to.
